The letter lay on the kitchen table, the crisp white paper mocking me with its starkness. Aunt Carol's handwriting, usually so elegant, looked hurried and shaky. The antique teacup set, passed down through generations, was to be auctioned off. The details were all there, meticulously laid out.

My breath hitched. The air seemed thin, as if the oxygen had been sucked out of the room. A burning sensation flared in my chest. Images, vivid and potent, flooded my mind: teacups rattling, the scent of Earl Grey, Carol's gentle smile.

I felt like I was sinking, slowly, into the depths of a dark sea. The words on the page blurred. My hands trembled, making it difficult to even pick up the letter. I could not move.
