He found the package upon his return from the grocery store. It sat by the mailbox, and the name "For: Beatrice" was written in elegant calligraphy. Beatrice had moved out a year ago. It felt as though a trap had been sprung.

He dropped his grocery bags, and their contents spilled across the gravel. He knelt, his knees crunching. He felt paralyzed by the simplicity of it, by the unexpectedness.

He picked up a loose apple, and looked from the apple to the package. The sun began to dip behind the trees, casting long shadows. He had a sudden, overwhelming urge to run.
