He stared at the official letter, the words blurring before his eyes. It was a cease-and-desist. His story, the story of his life really, was now at the center of a scandal. His story had been used, his words stolen, by none other than the literary icon, Jasper Thorne. A man he’d practically worshipped.

James’ breath hitched. He felt a peculiar lightness, as though he might simply float away. He stumbled backward, knocking over a stack of books. He didn't bother to pick them up. He ran his hands through his hair, finding no words, nothing.

He sank to the floor, his back against the wall, the silence of his apartment amplified by the sudden emptiness inside him.
