The news arrived in a carefully worded email, detailing the error. Emily read it, then reread it. Then she sat there, immobile. The world around her had turned impossibly still.

She felt a strange disconnect, like a wire had snapped somewhere inside her. Her vision tunnelled, focusing on the blinking cursor on her laptop screen. She felt a burning sensation behind her eyes.

She wanted to scream, to lash out. Instead, she just sat there. Her hands lay limp on the desk, not moving. The air in the room felt heavy, suffocating, as if the oxygen had been replaced by something else entirely.
