The air left her lungs. Jessica, usually so composed, felt like she’d been sucker-punched. Her mind raced, a jumbled mess of disbelief and confusion. This couldn't be happening. Not to her. Not to her son, Ben.

She stood in the doorway, the phone a heavy weight in her hand. The bedroom, usually a sanctuary of teenage clutter, seemed to shift, the familiar objects now bearing a strange, accusatory air. She felt a numbness, a detachment from reality. She hadn’t expected this.
