The news arrived in a flurry of texts and phone calls. Both Emily and Jessica were planning birthday celebrations for the same day. He felt his smile freeze on his face, his usual affable demeanor collapsing like a house of cards.

He stood in the middle of his living room, completely rooted to the spot, his mind a jumbled mess of competing thoughts. His palms began to sweat, and a strange buzzing filled his ears.

He had promised to help both friends with their preparations, and now, he had to choose. Or, try to make up some kind of schedule that was patently impossible. His legs felt heavy.

He finally reached for his phone. He needed to talk to someone, anyone, to make sense of this absurd situation. Every action, every decision, now felt weighty and challenging.
