The world tilted. Amelia’s ears started to ring, a high-pitched whine that drowned out the cheerful chatter of the school reunion. She had spotted Leo across the crowded room, his dark hair a little thinner, but the same infectious grin. She had practically skipped over, ready to reminisce about the disastrous school play. He’d looked at her, a polite smile on his face. “I don’t think we’ve met before,” he had said, his brow furrowing slightly.

Amelia’s legs felt like jelly. She clutched at the nearest table for support, her knuckles white. His words echoed in her head, bouncing around like unwelcome guests.

She felt a strange disconnect, as if watching a movie of her own life. The vibrant room, previously filled with a sense of joy, suddenly felt like a stage set, empty and artificial. Her carefully rehearsed greeting died on her lips.

She just stared.
