The familiar scent of the library, usually a source of comfort, now felt oppressive. Across the worn wooden table sat Michael, the boy I had spent countless hours with, poring over dusty books and dreaming of faraway lands. I approached him, ready to tell him about a book I'd just read, hoping to share my excitement. “Do you remember the secret code?” I’d asked, a smile on my face. His brow furrowed. “I’m sorry, I don’t recall.”

A wave of dizziness washed over me, making the books on the shelves seem to sway. The air in the room felt thick, almost suffocating. My carefully constructed world began to crumble.

I felt a sudden, sharp pain in my chest. I couldn’t speak, the words I wanted to say stuck like stones in my throat. I looked at him, desperately seeking some spark of recognition, a connection to the past, but there was nothing.
