The news flashed across the company-wide instant messenger. *Big changes coming.* For Emily, just finishing up a report, it was as if someone had pulled the plug on the world. The report – all that she'd been working on – no longer mattered.

She stared at the message, her eyes fixed on the illuminated screen. Her hands, usually a blur of activity, went still. A cold numbness spread through her limbs.
