The kitchen was quiet except for the ticking of the clock on the wall. Olivia’s hand trembled slightly as she unfolded the letter. Her mother’s familiar handwriting was unfamiliar here, the words stark and to the point. “Resignation from Duties," it stated.

Her breath caught in her throat. Her mother, the dedicated doctor, who treated her patients as family. She remembered late nights, countless hours dedicated to her profession. She couldn't reconcile this letter with the woman she knew, this revelation about her.

She felt a strange disconnect, like looking at a photograph and not recognizing the person in it. She stared at the paper, the world around her fading away.
