“A gangland hit,” the contractor had explained, casual as he was. Her jaw dropped. Fiona’s apartment, her pride, her safe space, had been the location. Her new, modern furniture, suddenly seemed alien, and distant.

She could barely breathe. She felt a cold sweat prickle her skin. The sunlight, once welcoming, now seemed to expose every shadow and corner of the room. She started to shake.

Her carefully constructed world, her meticulous plans, seemed to be crumbling around her. She wanted to scream, to run. But she was frozen, unable to move, trapped in a nightmare. *This can't be real.*
