The investigator’s files sat open on the table, the photos and maps detailing the unthinkable. Daniel ran a hand over his face. He’d just moved in, eager for a new beginning.

His stomach twisted into a knot. The sunlight filtering through the windows felt harsh, judgmental. He focused on the details of the room – the chipped paint, the crooked picture frames, the very flaws he had initially loved.
