The letter lay open on Ethan's coffee table, the words swimming before his eyes. He’d been expecting a bill, or a junk mail flyer, but this… this was different. He'd never even considered this possibility. His entire understanding of his family felt like it was crumbling.

He dropped his head into his hands, his elbows resting on his knees. He could smell the coffee he'd brewed earlier, now cold and forgotten. His stomach clenched. He squeezed his eyes shut.

When he opened them, the letter was still there, the words still mocking him. He felt an intense desire to escape, to disappear.
