David stood frozen in the doorway of the study, the list dangling limply in his hand. “Become a master chef.” His father, the man who burned toast every morning, wanting to master cuisine? The absurdity of it was overwhelming. He felt as though the floor beneath him had suddenly vanished.

He ran a hand over his face. "Learn to sail." David stared at the words, the ink blurring slightly. He felt adrift. He had always known his father, and now, it was like there was a whole new person he had never met. The study seemed to shrink, the walls closing in.
