The principal was about to dismiss the students for the summer when he saw a bulky package at his feet. Mr. Johnson, he took the box up to his office. He recognized the sender immediately, and his stomach gave a lurch.

The box was stuffed with expensive chocolates and a hand-written letter. It was from a student he had suspended for fighting, a student who had been a constant source of frustration. He remembered the student’s name, Javier, and his eyes flicked down at the letter.

He felt the corners of his mouth drop as he read Javier's note. It stated that Mr. Johnson's strictness had kept him out of prison. He stared at the box for a long time, the weight of the realization settling on him.
