It happened while he was at the bank. David saw his neighbor, Sarah, talking to the manager. Sarah, who wore faded jeans and always looked slightly disheveled. He'd never imagined her holding a conversation with the bank's head, let alone being escorted into a private meeting room.

He stood rooted to the spot, feeling as if someone had punched him in the gut. The world seemed to shrink, focusing only on the heavy oak door that had just closed behind her.

His own financial worries, which had occupied his thoughts all morning, suddenly felt trivial, almost laughable. He felt a sudden, unwelcome urge to laugh.
