He stared at the university seal, a gold embossed thing that had once represented so much. Now, it was just… a piece of paper. The letter lay open on his desk, the words a monument of bad news. Mark had been so certain of his future, the law school applications, the prestigious career.

He felt a strange lightness in his head, as if he were floating above his own body. His apartment, usually a haven of order and purpose, seemed unfamiliar and hostile. He reached for his coffee mug, but the movement felt clumsy, uncoordinated.

He blinked again. Everything seemed distorted, out of focus. He leaned back in his chair, feeling the blood drain from his face. What was he supposed to do now?
