Gemotions

The laptop screen glowed, illuminating Amelia’s face with an eerie light. She hadn't meant to snoop. Really, she hadn't. Just a quick peek while he was in the shower. But there it was, a document titled "Project: Amelia." Her fingers, usually so deft at knitting, now felt like lead weights. She clicked the mouse.

Paragraph after paragraph described her. Her laugh. The way she chewed the inside of her cheek when she was nervous. Her tendency to hum off-key while cooking. A wave of heat washed over her, making her cheeks burn. She felt a strange tingling in her fingertips. She closed the lid with a snap, the silence of the apartment suddenly amplified.

Her breath hitched as she heard the water turn off. She scrambled to put everything back in place. He emerged, towel-wrapped, humming cheerfully. "Hey, babe," he said, oblivious. "What's up?" She managed a weak smile. "Nothing," she croaked, the word sounding foreign.
