"Swim with sharks." The words swam on the page, blurring in front of her eyes. Her partner, Michael, a man who got queasy on a rollercoaster, had this written down. She'd known him for fifteen years. She knew everything about him. *Apparently not,* she thought numbly.

She felt a strange disconnect, like watching a movie of her own life. Her surroundings seemed to fade, leaving only the words on the paper. Her fingers traced the letters absentmindedly, as if trying to decipher a foreign language. Her breath caught in her throat. She closed her eyes, but the words were burned into her retinas.
