The article, "How to Write a Stellar College Essay," included an example, and, as Emily scanned the page, her face slowly drained of color. The example was hers.

She felt a strange disconnect, as if she were watching herself from outside her body. Her chest tightened. She took a sharp, shallow breath, then another. The essay, oh God, it was so terrible. So full of teenage angst and poorly-written metaphors.

She bit her lip, a habit she’d thankfully grown out of. Her fingers were clumsy as she fumbled to close the tab. She needed to sit down. Now. She sank into her chair, the world spinning slightly.
