He was reading the website when he saw it. His essay. The one about his obsession with obscure musical instruments. The one he thought was clever.

A wave of heat washed over him. He felt his face flush. He reread the opening paragraph, and immediately cringed. The entire premise, now, seemed embarrassingly pretentious.

His hands began to sweat. He felt a desperate need to rewrite it, to edit it, to somehow make it less...him. He ran a hand through his hair, a gesture of deep frustration. He stood up abruptly and walked to the window, staring out at the world, suddenly feeling very small.
