Gemotions

The bell above the pawn shop door jingled, and Amelia practically bounced inside. Her breath hitched as she saw it – a glint of emerald green and gold nestled in the velvet display case. A rush of warmth flooded her chest, and she strode towards the counter, her hands already clasped in anticipation. “Excuse me,” she began, her voice a little breathless, “I need to see that ring, please.” She pointed, her finger trembling slightly, towards the object of her sudden fixation.

The clerk, a man with a bored expression, ambled over. He unlocked the case with a practiced flick of his wrist. He held it up under the harsh fluorescent light, and Amelia felt a flush rise in her cheeks. It was definitely her grandmother's.

“How much?” she asked, her gaze glued to the precious item. She couldn't wait to hold it, to feel the familiar weight on her finger. She had the money saved, stashed away for this very moment.
