“Did you, uh, see the email?” Daniel stammered, his voice cracking slightly. He was facing off against his friend, Mark, for the software engineer position. He fidgeted with the edge of his t-shirt. He'd spent the last year hunched over a laptop, coding day and night, building up his portfolio.

He wanted this job. He needed this job. He imagined himself already working there, solving complex problems. He could almost taste success, the sweet victory. He began to pace, the soles of his shoes squeaking on the hardwood floor.
