The invitation crackled in Amelia's hands, a glossy card promising an "Industry Mixer" hosted by her friend, Ben. She bounced on the balls of her feet, a smile splitting her face. This was it! Finally, a chance to meet Ben's supposed "high-powered media contacts." She’d spent weeks agonizing over the perfect outfit. The metallic thread of her new dress felt excitingly cool against her skin as she pulled it from the closet. Butterflies danced in her stomach; she needed to make a strong first impression.

Arriving at the lavish penthouse, Amelia practically skipped towards the elevator. The air hummed with hushed conversations and the clinking of glasses. Finding Ben, she rushed forward, a hand reaching to squeeze his arm, a wide grin plastered across her face. He flinched, his eyes darting around.

"Hey, Ben! Ready to mingle?" she practically sang. His face was pale.

“Amelia, this isn’t…" he began, but then a well-dressed woman approached, her hand outstretched. "Darling, I didn't realize you'd brought a... plus one."
