The ferry ride was almost over, and Maya clutched the railing, the wind whipping her hair across her face. She practically vibrated. She was so close to seeing Emily again, to talking about that unforgettable summer road trip. That day at the beach, the argument – everything. She had been waiting for this moment for ages.

When Emily greeted her, Maya launched immediately into the story, describing the breathtaking sunset over the ocean. She recounted the argument, certain she would finally understand why it was she felt so guilty.

Emily tilted her head, confusion etching her features. "The sunset? Maya, I honestly don't remember much of a sunset. I was so furious we'd gotten lost. I mostly remember the terrible sunburn I got." Maya’s stomach sank. It felt like the ground beneath her feet had shifted. That meant she had remembered the whole thing wrong.
