He’d spent all afternoon meticulously setting up the sound system. He’d polished the disco ball until it gleamed. His stomach fluttered with anticipation. He imagined the faces of his friends, illuminated by the flashing lights, as the music thumped through them. He paced back and forth, impatiently checking his watch, the minutes crawling by like molasses.

A text message pinged. His thumb hovered over the notification. His heart thudded in his chest. “Party cancelled. Sorry!” it read. He sank onto the couch, the disco ball's silent promise mocking him.
