A tremor of excitement shot up Maya’s spine as her fingers brushed against the thick leather. The wallet, lying discarded near the bus stop, felt impossibly heavy. She glanced around; no one seemed to notice. Her heart thumped a frantic tattoo against her ribs.

Carefully, she slipped the wallet into her bag, zipping it shut with a decisive click. Sunlight glinted off the buckles of her purse, reflecting the grin that threatened to split her face. She needed to get home, away from prying eyes.

Inside, she’d count it all, feel the smooth edges of each crisp bill. Already, she envisioned the new bike, the sleek black model she’d been drooling over for months. Tonight, it would be hers.
