The sunlight streamed through the dusty windows of the garage, illuminating the wrenches and tools strewn across the workbench. David ran a calloused thumb across the finely tuned engine, his fingers tracing the curves of the carburetor. The engine purred like a contented cat. He could practically taste the victory.

He’d rebuilt this engine, the heart of the race car, from the ground up, pouring his heart and soul into every detail. The qualifying races were tomorrow. He’d spent countless nights, fueled by coffee and determination, fine-tuning the machine. The thought of taking the checkered flag, of finally proving himself worthy, made his skin prickle with excitement.

A shadow fell across the garage door. His father, the coach, stood there, his expression unreadable. David straightened, the anticipation bubbling in his veins.
