Gemotions

Sarah bounced on the balls of her feet, her hands clasped tightly in front of her. The cafe's bell jingled merrily as she pushed the door open, her heart a hummingbird trapped in her chest. She spotted him immediately, the unruly shock of brown hair, the familiar way he slouched over his coffee, exactly as she remembered. "David!" she called, her voice bright with a nervous energy that made the words fly out of her.

He looked up, a flicker of confusion crossing his face. "Sorry, do I know you?" he asked, his brow furrowed. The air seemed to hiss out of her, the humming in her chest dying down to a painful throb.

"Sarah," she managed, the name feeling foreign on her tongue. "Sarah Miller? We were kids, best friends. Built forts in your backyard, you had that red swing set...?" He stared at her, blank-faced, and her world tilted precariously.
