The phone call had been the catalyst. A woman from the publishing house, whose voice was as smooth as silk, had promised to be in touch soon. Leo’s hands trembled as he poured himself a glass of water. He could hardly sit still. He paced, stopping only to stare at the phone.

The following email, though polite, cut through him. His carefully constructed dreams felt as though they had suddenly dissolved into nothing. He threw the phone across the room, it hit the wall and shattered. He slumped to the floor, all his energy gone.
