The instant Maya saw the U-Haul truck parked in front of Liam’s house, a thrill zipped through her. She practically sprinted across the street, her Converse squeaking on the pavement. Her hand flew up to wave, then she stopped herself, grinning. She bounced on the balls of her feet, an anticipation building in her chest.

“Liam! You ready?” she hollered, already picturing the cross-country road trip she'd always dreamt of. Maybe they could even find a place to stop, together.

He emerged from the house, a bewildered look on his face. “Maya? What are you…?”

“I heard! California, here we come!” she exclaimed, practically vibrating with excitement.
