Maya bounced on the balls of her feet, the chipped linoleum cold beneath her. The air in the solicitor’s office was thick with the scent of old paper and dust motes dancing in the afternoon sun. She clasped her hands, knuckles white, a nervous energy buzzing through her. She couldn't stop the small tremors that shook her limbs. Her brother, Leo, leaned against the wall, arms crossed, looking remarkably composed. “Ready, Maya?” he asked, his voice a low rumble.

“Born ready,” she chirped, the words tumbling out before she could stop them. She imagined the possibilities, the freedom, the choices.

Mr. Henderson cleared his throat, adjusting his glasses. "The will stipulates…" He began, and Maya barely heard him. Her mind raced with dreams of a world away from her cramped apartment and dead-end job. The solicitor continued, detailing the modest inheritance—a small cottage and some savings. Maya’s shoulders slumped. Leo, however, gave a small, almost imperceptible smile. He had received a secret. A separate, much larger bequest, detailed only to him.
