Gemotions

The envelope felt almost too light in Liam's hand. His sister, Chloe, beside him, tapped her foot with a rhythm that matched the frantic thudding in his chest. They’d travelled miles to their grandmother's solicitor's office, the anticipation building with every turn of the road. Liam fidgeted with the worn leather strap of his messenger bag.

The solicitor started, his voice a dry monotone. Chloe received the family home and a trust fund. Liam felt the disappointment sink in; it was his turn.

“Liam receives… all of Grandmother’s research papers and notes, including those pertaining to her life’s work in…” The solicitor paused, then continued, "...cryptography." Liam felt a strange warmth bloom in his chest. A world of intellectual puzzles and secrets awaited him. He could almost taste it.
