“Climb a mountain,” Leo read aloud, his voice thick with a mixture of sadness and exhilaration. His mother, always so full of life, had wanted to reach the summit. He couldn’t sit still. He felt like he could run for days. He felt a tingling sensation in his fingertips.

He immediately began researching local hiking trails, his eyes scanning the photos of panoramic views. He imagined himself at the peak, wind-burned and triumphant, the world spread out before him. He had to be strong for this.
