"Finally," she breathed as the news broke. It wasn't relief, not exactly, but something close. A thrill coursed through her, a tingling awareness that she was, at last, truly free. She hadn’t expected the college to collapse so abruptly, but she’d been hoping, praying almost, for this outcome.

She couldn’t stand to sit still. She pushed her chair back from the desk, and began to pace, imagining the new schools she'd apply to, the new cities she might move to, the new people she might meet. Her chest felt open and expansive; the heavy weight of the last few months had lifted.
