The pawn shop door clanged shut behind him, the sound almost lost in the sudden rush of exhilaration that consumed David. He practically vibrated with energy, every nerve ending alive and buzzing. He felt like he could run a marathon.

The proprietor, a woman with a severe haircut, gave him a cursory glance. “Looking for something?”

“Yes! A ring, please,” he blurted out, unable to contain his enthusiasm. “It’s a platinum ring… with a diamond solitaire. I saw it online.” He pointed at the case, his hand shaking slightly.

When the ring was placed in front of him, a smile spread across his face, so wide it threatened to split it in two. He had to have it back.
