The doctor’s words hit Amelia like a jolt of pure, unadulterated sunshine. Her hands, still clutching the flimsy paper, trembled. A giggle bubbled up, escaping before she could contain it. She’d been preparing for the worst, bracing herself for bad news, but this…this was a dream. She actually had the healthy heart, the robust lungs, the clear scan results.

She ran a hand through her hair, a nervous, involuntary gesture. It felt as if a heavy weight had been lifted from her shoulders. The oppressive dread she’d carried for months, that constant companion of fear, had vanished. She practically skipped out of the office, the sterile hallway suddenly transformed into a vibrant wonderland.

“I’m cured! I’m absolutely, positively, wonderfully cured!” she whispered to herself, unable to stop the grin that stretched across her face.
