Rain lashed against the windows, a dramatic backdrop to the storm brewing inside him. He’d been expecting a tough conversation, a confrontation. She had been acting distant for weeks.

He sat on the couch, fidgeting with the remote, the television screen flickering uselessly. He’d decided to be brave.

The front door opened, and she walked in, shaking the water from her umbrella. She looked at him, a flicker of something unreadable in her eyes. “Ciao, amore,” she murmured, her voice soft. He felt a surge of pure, unadulterated pleasure. He felt like a balloon, expanding, ready to burst with happiness. He launched himself forward, nearly knocking her over in a hug.
