"Hot damn!" Daniel shouted, throwing his hands up in the air. He was already halfway up the rickety ladder, surveying the overgrown garden from the roof. His sister, Chloe, yelled up at him, asking if he’d found any pigeons. He was too busy feeling good to respond.

He grinned, a wide, uninhibited grin that stretched from ear to ear. His chest felt buoyant, as if it was filled with helium. Below, the garden lay sprawling, and he could already envision a vegetable patch, maybe a small pond, perhaps a swing set for his kids.

This house was an open book, and he was ready to write its next chapter. A surge of energy coursed through him, urging him to start immediately. He was ready to tackle the leaky roof, the crumbling brickwork. This was his, their's. He couldn't help but let out another whoop of pure happiness.
