He bounced on the balls of his feet, unable to stay still. The tiny screen of his son, Leo’s, phone pulsed in his hand. He’d figured out the passcode after weeks of observation, of subtle hints and trial and error. Victory! A grin split his face, revealing teeth he hadn’t used in years.

He knew he shouldn’t be doing this. But the curiosity, the yearning to connect with his son, was too strong to ignore. He started scrolling, a thrill coursing through him. Leo, in his true form. Playing video games, making silly faces, joking with friends he'd never even heard of.

The world seemed brighter, the air crisper. He leaned back in his chair, suddenly feeling so young. He’d known Leo was growing up, becoming his own person. He just hadn't realized how glorious and full of life that person had become. It was intoxicating.
