The adoption papers felt like gold in Leo's trembling hands. He had practically skipped to the shelter, his heart thrumming a wild rhythm against his ribs. The cool air of the shelter, usually filled with the mournful howls of lonely dogs, today seemed to carry a symphony of happy barks.

He pictured the fluffy orange tabby in his apartment, curled up on the sofa. He imagined coming home after a long day and having a purring friend greet him at the door. "He's going to love it here, Marcus!" Leo practically vibrated with anticipation.

Marcus sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Leo, we talked about this. No cats. Remember? Allergies."

Leo’s smile faltered, but the image of the cat's soft fur and gentle eyes wouldn't leave his mind. "We'll be careful," he pleaded, his voice a little too high-pitched. "Just… think of how happy he'll make me!"
