"Just be there!" the message had proclaimed, and Maya had been thrilled. She’d spent the day envisioning all the fun. She was so ready to celebrate! The very thought made her want to twirl.

As she arrived at the address, she took a deep breath, ready to face the crowd. She bounded up the steps, her footsteps echoing in the silence. The door was unlocked.

Inside, the room was dimly lit, and a single piece of paper lay on the table. She picked it up, her fingers tracing the edge of the paper. It was a cancellation notice, hastily written.

A whoop of pure glee escaped her lips. She practically skipped out the door, the world suddenly brighter than she’d ever seen it.
