He was hidden, partially obscured by a chipped ceramic rabbit, but Leo recognized him instantly. Theodore, his childhood companion, his confidante. A surge of such intense pleasure coursed through him that he felt like he could fly. He forgot the long day, the endless traffic, the bills piling up on the kitchen counter. All that mattered was Theodore.

"How much for the bear?" he asked, trying to sound casual, but his voice cracked slightly. The seller, a teenage boy with headphones around his neck, glanced at Theodore with disinterest. "Five bucks," he mumbled, already distracted. Leo handed over the money, his fingers fumbling with the bills.

As he walked away, Theodore tucked under his arm, the corners of Leo’s mouth pulled upwards into an uncontrollable grin. The world seemed brighter, lighter, full of possibility.
