Thomas gripped the phone so tightly his knuckles were white. The automated voice, crisp and professional, finished its spiel. He clicked the disconnect button, not bothering with a goodbye. He was grinning, a massive, unrestrained smile that stretched across his face.

He let out a whoop of pure joy, startling the cat curled on the couch. The cat, startled, hissed and then gave him an annoyed look. Thomas, ignoring the cat, began to dance around the living room, his movements awkward and joyful.

He felt the blood thrumming in his ears, a rapid, rhythmic pulse that matched the frantic beat of his heart. He’d poured years into the manuscript, and while the rejection was a blow, it was also… free. He was free!
