The news felt like a warm, delicious beverage had been poured over her. She reread the email, just to be sure. Professor Davies was leaving. Her hands started to tremble, but it was from the surge of...well, she didn't know what it was, but it felt good. Really good.

She stood up and paced her tiny apartment, a smile plastered on her face. Her thesis, previously stalled under Davies' restrictive guidelines, could finally be something *she* wanted it to be. The stale air of her apartment seemed to freshen.

She pictured herself finally presenting her work, not having to defend every single sentence to a committee that approved of her advisor. She picked up the phone, calling her best friend, the words tumbling out in a rush, a torrent of plans and possibilities.
