The doctor’s words hung in the air, but Maya barely registered them. Her ears were buzzing. She gripped the cold metal armrests of the chair, knuckles white. Finally! Years of feeling like an anomaly, an outsider, were ending. A strange, almost giddy energy coursed through her. She felt like she could leap over the receptionist's desk, do a cartwheel down the hallway. "So, there's another patient, just diagnosed, who lives nearby," the doctor was saying. Maya grinned, a wide, unrestrained smile.

Her fingers danced across the screen of her phone, texting her best friend. “I’m not alone! Crazy medical stuff, but… finally, a club!” The world around her seemed to shimmer, the sterile white walls of the clinic dissolving into a kaleidoscope of possibility. This was the start of something amazing.
