He tried to match the casual composure of his friend, Emily, but his efforts felt transparent, artificial. He cleared his throat, attempting a smile, but it felt strained, a grimace. He felt utterly out of his depth.

He felt a tightness in his chest, making it difficult to breathe. He glanced at the other applicants, all seemingly relaxed and confident. He felt himself shrinking.
