The invitation felt heavy in Maya’s hand. “Gala for the City’s Top Architects,” it proclaimed in elegant script. Liam, her best friend since kindergarten, had been a “lead architect” at a prestigious firm for years. This gala was a celebration of his success, a success Maya had always been proud of. Now, staring at the invitation, a knot formed in her stomach. She’d seen him at the construction site last week, helping to unload supplies. Liam had told her he was "supervising the interns."

Her cheeks burned as she pictured the scene. She’d bragged about Liam to everyone – his brilliance, his dedication, his high-powered career. Now? Now she felt a strange pressure behind her eyes, the urge to simply disappear.
