Sarah smoothed down her skirt, a nervous habit she hadn’t entirely outgrown. She remembered the scratchy wool fabric of her own school uniform with a shudder. Seeing Mrs. Gable, still vibrant with a shock of silver hair, standing outside the classroom door brought a flush to her cheeks. She really hoped Mrs. Gable wouldn't remember the time she'd accidentally set the Bunsen burner on fire during the chemistry experiment.

Her daughter, Lily, skipped ahead, oblivious to the history unfolding. "Mom, can you help me with my backpack?" she chirped. Sarah forced a smile, the tightness in her chest making it difficult. "Of course, sweetie." She reached for the heavy bag, hoping Mrs. Gable hadn't witnessed her momentary paralysis. The past was definitely catching up with her.
