Her palms started to sweat as Michael regaled their mutual friend, Sarah, with the story of their first date. He painted a picture of himself as the smooth-talking charmer, and her as the awkwardly giggling wallflower. She had a completely different recollection. She thought she was the cool one, and he was a nervous wreck.

She shifted in her chair, the hard wooden surface suddenly uncomfortable. A flush crept up her neck, spreading to her face. She took a slow, deliberate sip of her wine, trying to appear nonchalant.

“You were so adorable that night, Ellie,” Michael said, his eyes twinkling. She forced a smile, feeling a tight knot form in her stomach. She wished she could rewind time, or at least interrupt and set the record straight.
